I am a (relatively) new programmer wanting to learn python. It took me over a half hour to figure out to run pythonstartup.py before my program would run. Otherwise I just get an empty console. Maybe some instructions would be great for us newbies.

Could you expand on that a bit? You should get some kind of output in your console before the program is run, regardless of whether the pythonstartup.py is run first -- so it may be that you've run into a bug that we don't know about. If you could send us the program in question, we'll be able to investigate further.
