Are multiple accounts permitted? (1 paid + 1 free)

Hi, I searched and found old posts here which suggests that multiple accounts are OK, but the newest was five years old so I thought it was worth checking nothing’s changed.

I’m about to upgrade my free account to Hacker in preparation for launching a small website. I’d like to set up another free account to act as a QA environment - so I can have the site live in the Hacker account, mess about with changes in free account, and then pull the updated code to the Hacker account once I’m happy (via GitHub)

Is having two accounts like this still permitted?

Yes, that's fine! In fact, I'd go further and say that the setup you describe is something we would strongly encourage people to do if they want to test out changes in a staging environment before moving it to their production account.

Thanks! Does the second account need a different email address to the first?

PS: Thanks so much for the amazing response. I wasn’t expecting an answer until next week!

Nope, you can use the same email address if you like! The only things to look out for if you have multiple accounts using the same email address are:

  • When you log in to the site, you have to use the username (eg. "rogfrich") rather than the email address so that the system knows which one you're trying to log in to.
  • If you forget your password and use the password reset page, you'll enter your email address and then get a separate email for each account using that address. They'll have the username for the account they relate to in the subject line, though, so it will be pretty easy to work out which is which.

Splendid. Thank you!

Can I create another free account for testing purposes? I already have one account and a web with PythonAnywhere, and I am quite satisfied with the performance and features. Now, I am upgrading my current application to a higher version, but I don't want to disturb the running one. My concern is whether I can open another free tier for development and testing purposes only. Once the test result is positive, I will add the upgrade to my permanent running account. Is there anyone who can help me with this?

Yes you can. If you use the same email address you will be subject to the conditions Giles mentioned here.
